Bowl Board

Bowling Tips and hints for improving your bowling ability

You have probably noticed that very often no two bowling lanes are the same and that can oftentimes influence the way that the ball rolls.  The following hints and bowling tips will help you to compensate for this.

It would be rather easy and boring if all one needed to do was to roll the ball in order to obtain strikes.  But this is no more likely than coming across a naturally green sheep!  Once might even go so far as to say that every lane is different.  While this may be an exaggeration it is nevertheless common to find that a pair of lanes are not alike.

Some lanes tend to ‘run out of the window’.  This is when you are able to achieve too much hook instead of having difficulty achieving any hook at all.  Then there are lanes that tend to ‘hold’ the ball.  This means that hooking is not the problem but you do have difficulty getting the ball to come up in the pocket.

Among the possible differences between lanes that you might experience these are two of the most common ones, although you will find lanes with the right hook to suit you.  Of course this means that what is perfect for you is not necessarily perfect for your teammates and you should keep that in mind if they are not bowling as well as you.

Depending upon the type of lane you are playing on you should be able to change your usual deliver accordingly with minimal difficulty.  Your first bowl should always be from your normal position no matter what lane you are bowling one.  You never make any changes until you have first determined the ball’s performance.  This is the most basic rule when it comes to the issue of moving.

If you bowl using your right hand then you will need to move left while not changing your spot but only if your ball comes up too quickly or if it keeps crossing the lane.

When you are bowling on ‘slow’ lanes this is the proper adjustment to make.

When spot bowling you need to take into account the spot down the lane from where the ball breaks toward the pocket.  Usually, this spot is approximately two thirds down the lane and is nowhere near as far away as the number one pin.

Imagine a line drawn all the way down the lane from where you take up your position once you know how the ball breaks.  From the spot where it breaks you move to the foul line and then release the bass so that it then rolls over that spot.  Whereas there are some people who find that the spot is too far down the lane, there are others who find this tip rather beneficial.

When you are playing on a ‘fast’ lane, moving slightly to the right can prove to be rather helpful.  If the ball is not reaching the number one pin then this adjustment is necessary.

You might find that the method many experienced bowlers use is the most suitable method for you.

Bowling on a ‘slow’ lane does not mean that you should move to the left, because you need only to move your spot to the right slightly, however you maintain the same position for your approach.

When bowling on a fast lane nothing changes except that you move your spot to the left.

By moving your spot to the right while maintaining your position you will be able to cope with a lane that causes too much hook.

You should always resist the urge to make any significant changes to either your spot or your position.  One board can have a very significant effect on your performance.

Do not avoid bowling on lanes that are not favorable, because this will help you to determine how the ball will perform.  When you are able to make the necessary changes after bowling only one ball you will be just like the pros who are capable of doing that.

Last, but not least, alter the speed of the ball to help you to find the strike pocket.  If the ball does not reach the head pin, slow down the speed, and increase it if the ball keeps on crossing the lane.

This is not in keeping with basic bowling rules which advocate sticking with a smooth delivery once you have managed to master it.

Being able to read a lane and determine the necessary adjustments comes with practice and experience.
