iii) whats the total surface area of the can?
[formula is.. 2(pie r square)+(2 x pie x r x h ) ? ]
2. A sugar canister is 30cm tall and has a diameter of 12 cm. It is filled to 2 cm from the top.
iii) what volume of sugar does it contain?
[ how would i caculate this? subtract 2 from the volume?]

1i) You have 2 tin disks, one for the top, one for the bottom, which are identical. Find the area of one disk:
A = pi r^2
r = 1/2 diameter = 8/2 = 4
A = pi (4)^2
A = 16pi
A = 50.3
Total tin used:
2A = 2(50.3) = 100.6 cm^2 tin used
ii) Cardboard tube can be cut to form a rectangle with height (H) 15cm and width = circumference (C) of tin disk.
C = pi (diameter) = pi (8) = 25.1
A = HC
A = (15)(25.1)
A = 376.5 cm^2
iii) Total surface area = area of top + area of bottom + area of sides
area of top = area of bottom = (1/2)total tin used = 50.3
total of top and bottom = 100.6
area of sides = area of tube = 376.5
SA = 100.6 + 376.5 = 477.1 cm^2
2) The volume of the sugar container:
V = pi r^2 h
r = 1/2 (diameter) = (1/2)(12) = 6
But the volume of sugar is not the same as the volume of the container. We have to subtract 2 from the height of the container.
So, instead of height = h, the height of the sugar = h – 2 = 30 – 2 = 28.
V = pi (6^2) (28)
V = 1008 pi
V = 3166.7 cm^3
