Cookie jars have been around ever since 1929 during the Great Depression. They were composed of glass with screw on lids which were made of metal. After that stoneware grew to be well-liked in the 1930′s, and a company in Ohio created the first ceramic cookie jar. So from the late 1930′s virtually all jars have been composed of ceramic.
Before long, rather than being embossed on the face of the container, manufacturers began using figures of well-known characters. They were also designed to resemble fruits, vegetables and even animals. You could say that cookie jars experienced a golden era of popularity, from 1940 to 1970.
