What most consumers are being told is that the cost to move their property from State A to State B is based on the number of pounds the loaded shipping truck is. The heavier the amount of your items, the more expensive your move becomes.
Moving Weight Standard:
For your long distance move, if a mover offers a non-binding moving estimate, then charges will be based on the actual weight of your shipment. By law, the mover may not add transportation charges based on cubic feet, hourly rates, or anything else like that other than weight alone to compile your shipment charges. The mover is supposed to weight your belonging on a state certified scale and a copy of your weight master ticket be given to you as part of your final papers to settle the move.
Moving truck weight is calculated by weighing the truck before loading and after loading – the difference is what you pay for.
The moving companies can also opt to take these weigh readings at destination when the shipment is delivered. The driver will have the truck weighed with your shipment on board and then weighed a second time after your shipment has been unloaded.
Shady movers intentionally don’t mention the fact that as a consumer, you have the right to be at the weight station to witness the process and as a result, consumers wind up paying far more than their fair share.
It’s beneficial to know that these weights reflect the real weight of what you are moving.
Be certain that:
1. tires, various types of tools, blankets and covers, carts, dollies, and other items are all part of the first and last weight. What you want to avoid is having items that were not part of the first weight to be weighed in as part of the final shipment, adding someone else’s weight to your shipment.
2. the diesel the truck has is same before and after the weight process. A full gas tank recorded at the start needs to be recorded at the end, too. If the reading was done on an empty fuel tank, you don’t want to pay for additional weight of a full fuel tank. You must expect the reading to be done consistent so that you can gauge the true weight of your belongings.
3. you attend weigh-in stations at the beginning and end of the trip. As per the law, a reputable moving company must welcome such initiative on the part of the consumers.
Dishonest moving companies might exploit this difference in the weight as well as your absence. Finally, any shipment under 3,000 pounds is not required to be weighed at a state certified weigh station, and may instead be weighed on a certified warehouse scale.
