A Review of the J.A. Henckels Brand of Knives

Another cutlery manufacturer that has its birthplace in Solingen, Germany is Zwilling J.A. Henckels. Created in 1731, it can claim a number of “firsts”, including the first stainless steel blades, multi-purpose kitchen shears, forged knives with molded handles and hybrid forged knives. This company is also considered one of the most skilled blade makers on the planet. It would seem that thanks to 278 years of existence, Henckels Four Star Knife Sets could be called the sharpest knives in the block.

Product Descriptions

In keeping with the company’s logo – a modern version of the zodiac sign of Gemini – each of the Henckels knives are designated with the word “Twin” and then the series name. Henkles produces eleven Twin series – 1731, Cermax M66, Select, Cuisine, Four Star II, Pro “S”, Five Star, Four Star, Gourmet, Signature and Grip Parers – in addition to a product line consisting of cleavers and dicers. Every one of these knives have been made in Germany, except the Cermax M66 product line which is made in Japan.

Most of Henckels knives are made of strong German high-carbon, no-stain steel blades, which are then ice-hardened to increase their blade strength and resistance to corrosion. This is to be expected since Henckels invented the Friodur ice-hardening process for forged knives. Conseqently, if you are contemplating bringing home a Henckels knife set, you will enjoy the advantages of German expertise with world-class standards.

Advantages

The good thing about Henckels Four Star Knife Sets is the different kinds made for customers from the enthusiastic amateurs to the professional chefs. Consequently, a number of budgets are served by its affordable products in the Twin Signature series to the high-quality knives found in the Twin Cermax M66 series. Of course, the grade of materials utilized and the fabrication method employed are comparable for every knife made in these factories.

The superior knives found in the Cermax M66 Henckels series slices like a laser through whatever you are cutting. These knives are able to cut, slice, dice, chop and mince more effectively than any other knife for a comparable price. Furthermore, the heaviness and balance of Cermax knives are ideal; so much so that expert chefs are increasingly preferring the Cermax M66 as opposed to, say, similar knives over at Wusthoft.

Even Henckels’ stamped steel knives in the Twin Signature product line are good tradeoffs between expense and craftsmanship. Indeed, over two hundred years of producing knives is bound to pay off!

Disadvantages

Particularly in cases where you do your shopping online, check and double check that you are being given what you wanted and spent your money on. There have been instances of the product descriptions of a Henckels knife set that failed to adequately describe the items shipped.

Then there is the issue of reputation. Because Henckles now markets less expensive knives that now and again don’t satisfy expectations, the other well-made knives suffer from the other’s failures. This is much like the parable of one or two bad apples ruining the complete basket.

In the end, the choice of a Henckels Knife Set routinely hinges on two things: your cooking style and the size of your bank account. Normally, you will be forced to sacrifice either price or quality but with Henckels knives, the dilemma is made easier.
