Creating More Kitchen Storage Space
A kitchen does not just have to function well as a place to prepare food, but also as a space where it is stored. A lack of properly organized kitchen storage is the number one complaint that most people have about their kitchens.
If your kitchen is more than a little cramped and cluttered and you are not quite ready to call in a kitchen remodeling team, there are a few simple tweaks you can make that will free up some precious storage space quickly and easily. Here are just a few of them:
Ruthless De-Cluttering
Yes, that rooster shaped canister set did belong to your grandmother and, yes, it would be a shame to get rid of it. However, it has a layer of dust on it an inch thick because it hasn’t been moved from its spot on kitchen shelf for as long as anyone can remember. The same goes for that fondue set your mother insisted on buying you for your anniversary last year, and you didn’t have the heart to tell her that, no, in your mind at least, the seventies craze for lukewarm gooey cheese dips is not back, whatever her women’s magazines say.
To regain space instantly in your kitchen, get everything you do not use out of there. If you cannot bear to part with something store it in the basement, the attic, the garden shed, anywhere where it is not gobbling up precious space that could be put to better use.
Reorganize
The simple act of reorganizing your kitchen cabinetry a little can also be a quick way to free up extra storage space. Take that spaghetti out of its bulky box and store it in an attractive counter top kitchen canister instead. The same can be done with coffee, flour, sugar, in fact any number of dry goods. The new canisters will also add a little extra flair to your kitchen décor and suddenly you will have enough extra room in your kitchen cabinets to actually be able to see at a glance what you have in there.
Invest in a Kitchen Storage System
Just as you can buy organizers for your bedroom closets you can find them for your kitchen cabinets as well. Many kitchenware companies offer specialized solutions including easy pull-out shelves, special storage dispensers for tins and canned goods and extra deep drawers for large baking items. You can even opt to have a custom-made kitchen cabinet storage system installed that really makes the most of every inch of the available space.
Add an Island
If it is storage space, not floor space, that is the problem, the addition of a kitchen island is relatively quick and easy and can solve all your storage problems instantly. There are many different styles you can choose, from the most basic kitchen islands with just a few cupboards underneath to really rather sophisticated ones that have their own small sink. Another advantage of adding a new kitchen island is that it can also often do double duty as a casual dining area without gobbling up too much extra square footage.
