How does the stage production of His Dark Materials do the breaking of the Subtle knife?
I am hoping to put on a production of the second part of His Dark Materials stage play and was wondering how either the National or other venues achieved the breaking of the knife and then the fixing on stage. We have a large budget and a lot of time but can’t remember/work out how they did it!
As far as I remember (I saw the productions at the Festival Theatre in Edinburgh, May 2009), they had built a plastic dagger which, when a button was pressed, fell apart. Putting it back together, I imagine they just held the button and pushed the pieces back in.
I can’t think of a way you could recreate such a thing. I was thinking of one of those trick plastic daggers from costume/joke shops that slide into the handle when pressed. But you’d somehow have to push the blade in and then drop pretend bits of dagger…
I think it’d be useful to bear in mind that the dagger would only really need to break into two pieces to get the point across. So perhaps you could get two butter knives, break off the handles, and then slide them into something. Then when it breaks, you’d just have to tip it up, or untie it before the scene, or simply drop it, or something. . . . Worth a thought.
Sorry I can’t be more helpful. Hope you find something workable!
