For those who want a place for everything and will return items to their places, an organizer handbag may be worthy of consideration. Typically these feature several compartments and pockets or slots to hold cell phones, checkbooks, and credit cards. If they have a shoulder strap, it is often detachable. They may also have a clip or snap for keys.
If a less structured approach is more to your liking, you may be happier with one of the many hobo bags on the market. These are normally just a single large, soft pouch and a strap to carry on the shoulder. If you want to compromise, you could place small things in separate smaller pouches before adding to your bag.
If you often have the need to carry items such as a book, snack, or water bottle, you might prefer a tote or hobo bag. Either style will let you take along your tape player, overstuffed wallet, or personal organizer. Some styles are large enough to hold your lunch or spare shoes.
