Mushroom Canister
Canister or Hang-on filter?

I have a 40 gallon saltwater aquarium with about 60 lbs of live rock, 5 small fish, and about 15 crabs/snails, and a few shrimp. (Maybe 25 mushrooms and a few random corals) I’ve had the tank running for 6 months now on a Marineland Penguin hang-on filter. I also have 2 Koralia powerheads (1&3). So my question is would there really be any advantages to switching to a canister filter? I have a used Rena XP3, but with the 2 powerheads I don’t see a point to switching. Does anyone out there have any input? My tank is in great shape right now and I figure at most the only other thing I could add to the filter would be phosphate absorber.

Adding a canister filter isn’t going to benefit the tank in the long run, it will actually become more detrimental. You already have enough biological with the 60 lbs of live rock, so more bio will not do anything but increase the nitrates in your tank, meaning dirtier water. Corals like clean water (low nitrates, low phosphates). Since the tank is only 6 months old, you wont notice much of a nitrate problem initially. Its after the first year or so that you will see problems associated with elevated nitrates, algae blooms, corals may change color depending on the species, unable to decrease nitrates regardless of water changes. Pump wise, your tank is fine with the 2 koralias. I would leave the Penquin on the tank (minus the bio wheel, as its not needed) and use it to hold phosphate remover, carbon, etc. I would invest in a hang on protein skimmer as it will remove organics from the water lessening the load on the biological. If you are not already, use RO/DI water to further help keep your water balanced.
