Student loans for husband father main bread winner?
So my husband is being forced out of his job of 11 years (long lame story) and wants to return to school full time We have two children and I will be having to return to work probably making minimum with my lack of skills since I have been the at home mom for quite sometime. I’m excited for him and see that if we want to make it farther this is what is needed. But what are the student loans like is there any financial advice for those starting out all over again? We do have some savings but we will be needing that to supplement our living for awhile. Also While I am working and he is in school he will also be taking care of the kids. This I am hoping will offset the cost of daycare..
Well, I went back to school after being fired illegally from a job. My husband is ill, and unable to work anything but PT and I was basically the one who supported us. Student loans can get you. See if you qualify for any and all grants, the Pell, any local grants that are offered by the state, grants that are offered by the college that he will be attending. Also, ask at the college for any links to scholarships. There are MANY out there, and you’d be surprised at some of the qualifications. It takes time, though to sift through all of the ones available.
Try to go ahead and if possible, file for unemployment. Also go ahead and see if you qualify for any assistance from your state, as in food stamps. But beware. Though the state health insurance is okay, it’s hard to find a good doctor, and it’s also opening the door for the government to try and step in and tell you when to take the kids in for check ups, vaccines, etc. and so forth. I just don’t feel comfortable with giving the government that much control over what I do with my kids!
See about filling out a FAFSA, check with deadlines at whatever college he’s going to. I don’t think it’s too late to apply for spring. And try to go for anything but loans unless you have to, then apply for a Stafford Subsadized loan as that will delay all payments AND interest until six monthes after your husband gets out of school. Also, if you find that you are having difficulty paying those loans off after college, call the bank that loaned to you. Talk with them, ask for defferment, or ask if you can pay a set amount that is within your budget. The main thing is that you are trying to pay those school loans off, and willing to try to meet the loan giver half way.
