what exactly are the fuel rods at Fukushima? are they pure metal, alloy or sintered metal oxide ceramic or ?
The active fuel is Uranium Dioxide. That is pretty much the standard chemical whereby which we can contain Uranium long term.
The cladding sleeves set a boundary between the UO2 and the coolant, and the cladding is made from Zirconium alloy named Zircalloy.
