Your First Place, Now What?
You’re finally done with college, and you have accepted your first job, most likely you are also going to be setting up your very first home that is all your own. That is a lot of new responsibility that you are taking on, and being somewhat prepared for the transition is going to make is so much easier. Here are a few ideas that will make your new apartment or house a little easier to get along with.
Think about the things you already own. There is a good chance you already have your own bed, a dresser, and a chair and some sort of table. If you had furniture in your room at home, ask your parents if you can take it to your new place, this can save you some precious money and bring a touch of home with you to your new place. Not to mention, a dollar saved is a dollar earned, take advantage of things they give you.
If you are asked what you need the most, suggest cleaning products. Even though you may have been told that someone already went through the house or apartment and it’s clean, you really should go over it again before moving in. Since cleaning products can be pricey, especially when you are going to need to buy groceries for the first time, this is a great suggestion for those at a loss.
The first room to really concentrate on is the kitchen. This is one room that all your friends are going to see, and surely you are going to do some light entertaining. Forgo the purchase of a fancy area rug or end tables in the living room and instead purchase a good solid table and chairs set. Most likely they are going to get the most use since everyone tends to gravitate to the kitchen eventually.
Picking up a good kitchen knife set is something that you really need to do. Instead of buying the least expensive and having to replace it shortly, spending a couple extra dollars here is going to get you knives that will last your lifetime. A cheap knife will lose it’s edge quickly, and is not made to be durable and could possibly end up hurting you should the blade break during use.
Something else to think about when buy knives is to consider the purchase of a knife block set. They will extend the life of your knives by preventing them from being knocked about in a drawer and losing their edge or getting nicks. They will also keep your knives within handy reach, exactly where they are supposed to be when you need them.
Small kitchen appliances are also going to be important. Most any toaster will do, but choosing a Cuisinart hand mixer is going to be one of the best buys you can make. They are well-known for their quality and longevity, have a wide selection of speeds, and a fabulous warranty. Some of them in the past even came with their own bowls and stands for conversion to a stand mixer, which provides double duty in any kitchen.
The last room to consider when setting up housekeeping for the first time is the bathroom. Buy a good bathmat with a no-slip backing and make sure you have plenty of bath linens such as towels and washcloths. When purchasing a shower curtain, choosing fabric over vinyl will save you from replacing it ever few months. Just toss it in the wash and rehang. It won’t tear like plastic and you will save money in the long run.

True Love Waits: Christopher O’Riley Plays Radiohead $6.31 Rock bastardizations of classical music are as old as Kim Fowley’s–and ELP’s–Tchaikovsky tweaking “Nutrocker.” But classical interpretations of rock music have generally been something of a high-wire act. While most pop fare has strong melodic foundations for the soloist to build from, Christopher O’Riley has challenged himself here with the catalog of Radiohead, one of modern rock’s most acclai… |

Beyond the Sea $2.87 You’ve got to credit Kevin Spacey for sheer gumption: not only did he choose to direct a biopic about Bobby Darin (not the hippest of 1960s singers), but he also decided to star in it despite the fact that he was in his midforties and Darin died at 37. As if this weren’t enough, unlike Jamie Foxx in Ray, Spacey performs all the songs himself. The hard-driving “Hello Young Lovers” starts off the al… |
