Why a plastic bag filled with water does not burn on the flames?
When a plastic bag is put into the fire it would burn because of heat, So why a water filled plastic bag not above the fire flame?
Basically the heat is transferred to the water.
The simple rule: heat is transfer from hotter things to cooler things.
So if you fill the bag with the water, and put it on the flame, heat from the flame will be transferred to the substance that form the bag, and then to the water, since the water’s initial temperature is lower than the flame.
So if you continue to burn them, the whole-system’s temperature will increase at the same time, and until one of them (either water or the the bag) melts.
As usual, the bag’s melting point is higher than water’s (100 degree Celsius), and when the water boils, the temperature remain at the level of 100 degree C. And the heat (if still transferred) will be passed to the environment (but this is theoretically saying, the real phenomenon is depend on the condition of the environment).
But however, all these mean: the heat will makes the whole system hotter, and if the temperature of the system doesn’t reach the melting point of the bag, it will not melt.
