How do you make plastic containers or covers for equipment or electronics?
It can be a challenge creating technology and designing hardware with chips and soldering and the whole shebang, but once whatever you’ve made is made, how do you put it in a pretty container with buttons and everything? Cardboard boxes and sculpting wooden containers aren’t feasible. How do you design and then produce plastic ware? Without being involved with “big companies” or corporations.
Something like making a little hand-held game, or an xbox 360. How do you make/design/produce the container for your electronics?
There are two ways depending on what exactly you want to achieve.
First you could hit up Radio Shack. They sell various sizes of what they call project enclosures; standard size plastic electrical boxes. They include a plastic box, mounting screws, metal stand off (which I’ve never actually used, they never fit right) and a lid. You can use whatever method you want to cut openings for switches, lights etc.
The second option is rapid prototyping. There are companies around that offer one-off rapid prototyping services. I’ve used rapid prototyping with great success for school projects. Using a software like SolidWorks or Pro-E you design your enclosure to fit everything you need, export it as an STL file and send it to the company. The final parts are a little rough, but a little filler putty and paint and they look professionally done.
Unfortunately Radio Shack discontinued my favorite method which was metal project enclosures. For certain applications they look better and they’re more rugged. I loved them but they aren’t avaialble at Radio Shack anymore, though you may be able to find them online somewhere.
