Where does the stuff we recycle go?
I watched a documentary that said that when it leaves our house then it goes to China to get processed into reusable products. If this is true then isn’t this kind of a joke. Is this definitely true?
A lot of scrap metal is shipped overseas to Asia. Any given aluminum can could be shipped back to the west as part of a household appliance, but not every can.
Plastics are generally recycled in the west were they are made into beads/pellets for immediate re-use in moulding. Some end up in popular “polar fleece” jackets and sweaters. But most of that clothing is made in Asia.
To a large extent, Asian countries lack the resources and/or the ability to produce these materials in adequate quantities to meet their demand. So they rely on the west to supply them sometimes with recyclable materials and sometimes with raw materials.
