Why do single malt Scotch distillers love wasteful packaging?
Some (but not all of course) feel compelled to stick a glass bottle into a tube (or at least a paperboard carton). You rarely see this affectation much in other spirits categories, at any price point.
This question is asked because a previous question had answerers respond that Scotland was more civilized than anyone else. Yet this wasteful packaging seems to be environmentally unfriendly and counter to civilized behavior.
Working in a liquor store, most of our customers take the bottles out of the tubes and ask us to throw the tubes away. Often we get single malts in gift packs as well, with additional glasses, and we have no room for this, thus it has to be thrown away.
Most of our other spirits producers don’t waste our time like this and just provide a liquid in a bottle and let our customers decide for themselves what kind of glassware they want, if they even want any at all.
It is wasteful and bad for the environment. Much of what is sold or shipped via mail is shipped with wasteful packaging. Marketing is how some of the real crappy Scotch is sold. Some of the worst Scotch sold today is the result of great advertisements and marketing gimmicks.
