how do you sharpen a serrated knife blade at home?
Was given a set of knives of just the right size, but they all have the serrated (saw tooth) blade. how do I sharpen them? Know how to sharpen a straight edge, but that won’t work on these. Help
You need something small enough to get in those teeth. Serrations with normal type of teeth are no problem, the only once you can’t really sharpen is the needletooth serrations.
You can sharpen from the back side, but that eventually files off the teeth.

You can sharpen them using either triangular or smaller diameter ceramic or diamond sharpeners. Technique is same as with normal sharpening, just you go between the teeth and that’s all. Then few passes on the flat side to remove any burr and you’re done.
I’ve used several different sharpeners for that process, and they all worked fine:

1) Spyderco sharpmaker, even the finest ceramic triangles work. Shown on the top of the photo.
2) Narrow ceramic rods, they camewith Edge Pro sharpening system and not really meant for serrations, except they work very well for that 
You can see them on the bottom of the photo.
3) DMT sharpening steels,those are 10-12″ long, ~10mm diameter steel rods and since they’re diamond sharpeners they cut real fast, so be careful.

I think #3 and #4 are the cheapest options. Spyderco sharpmaker is effective, but not that good as a knife sharpener unless you buy diamond rods and then it becomes even more expensive.
