What is the best way to make strong, wide shelves?
I want to make nice looking storage shelves that are 48″ wide WITHOUT any partition. I want them to last a long time and have NO sagging. Would this work if the shelves were made with plywood that was an inch and a half thick?
Not sure what you mean by no partition. If you want to just use a piece of plywood by itself, over time it’s probably going to sag no matter what. You’ll at least need to nail a 1×2 or larger face piece onto it. You might get away with a thick slab shelf but plywood is probably not going to cut it. However, you can build very nice shelves with 2x4s and 1/2″ plywood very easily. Just make a square out of the 2x4s, with a plywood sheet nailed on top. Look at the link below for instructions.
