5 Makeover Tips for Small Rooms
When a room is small, that doesnt mean it should lack in style. There are plenty of ways to decorate a small room so that you end up with a room thats stylish with plenty of functionality. Paint an Accent Wall
A great option is to paint one wall in the room a bold color creating an accent wall. This give the room a stylish feel, and it also helps it to appear larger than it is. Make sure, however, that you paint the other walls a complementary color. Otherwise the one bold wall might look out of place.
Its a good idea to stay away from dark colors, though. Stay away from colors like black, dark blue, red, or dark green. Instead go with colors such as pink, yellow, or aquamarine. After all, dark colors in a small room inevitably make the area look much smaller.
Choose Furniture That Fits the Size of Your Room
Be sure to keep your furniture to scale. This means that youre not going to want to put a huge wood bed in a small bedroom. You can apply this same principle to the family room. Instead, look for furnishings that fit well and that dont overpower the room. Its always important to be able to comfortably walk around a room without bumping into furniture.
Find Furniture That Also Works as Storage
When you go to choose furniture for a small room, look for pieces that are also functional. For instance, a piece like a wooden chest not only can pose as a side table or coffee table but can also provide storage for items such as blankets and toys that you may need to store in the room. If you can sneak more storage into your small space, you will end up with much more room.
Also be sure you are maximizing your vertical space. By maximizing the height of your walls, not only are you adding more storage but also more design space. A wooden bookshelf and armoires make great vertical storage pieces.
Attaching shelving to the walls is another way to create additional space. You can use the shelving both for design and functional space. By placing some of your books and knickknacks on the shelves in an interesting manner, you can add additional style to the area.
Let in Some Light to Open Up a Room
Try to allow as much natural light as possible to filter into your small room. Natural light will always make a room look bigger and brighter. Keep it simple with a pair of plain drapes or blinds, avoiding overwhelming window treatments. Another great tip is to add mirrors to the walls, which will reflect the light, making the room look even larger.
