My friend thinks I’m crazy for teaching my 3.5 year old knife skills. What is the right age?
It all started when she decided to use my sharp chef’s to supreme an orange after watching me do it, and she did pretty good for using such a big, heavy knife. (Okay, before you start on the supervising thing, I know. I have another, smaller child to take care of as well so sometimes I can’t be everywhere.)
Anyways, she’s using a paring knife now to cut things like tomatoes for salad, zucchini and asparagus. I want to get her her own mini-chef knife(like the Rachael Ray Furi for kids), but everyone keeps saying she is too young. But I think using a butterknife to saw through carrots is asking for more trouble than a good knife.
She is pretty mature for her age and she loves being in the kitchen with me and wants to help. She also knows to curl your fingers in when cutting and keep your blade pointed down at the cutting board.
Do you think it’s too young to start her using a real knife?
And ALWAYS with close supervision
I think some people may freak out at this idea but I think it is pretty interesting , I think as long as you pay deathly close attention and watch her like you have never watched her before it should be ok, just go slow make sure she doesn’t try and show off by going to fast or doing anything fancy , its great shes learning at such a young age I would just say be careful because even the most experienced chefs chop fingertips off and no matter how old you are it HURTS so I just stress caution and going slow , other then that good luck .
