
Field Trips outside the Classroom for Pre-School Children
It has been my experience that many pre-school classroom teachers do not participate in Field Trips outside the classroom environment. Field Trips do involve some risk but the benefits out weigh those risks. Field Trips can enrich new areas of interest and will be an adventure for the children. I personally would not teach a Pre-School Classroom without taking the students on many Field Trips throughout the year to enhance their educational learning.
When considering whether a pre-school class should go on a field trip, consider the trip itself. Will the trip be beneficial to the children? Will the field trip be related to the lessons the children have been learning in the classroom? A field trip is an opportunity to broaden the child’s view of a lesson. A field trip can provide challenges that will allow the child more individual hands on learning from an expert in a particular field.
When teachers take their students out of the classroom, they are providing their children with another type and mode of learning. A field trip experience offers the opportunity to see a lesson through their own eyes. The children have the opportunity to see, touch, hear, smell and feel. These hands on activities allow the student to observe first hand and it provides a long lasting experience for the children. They are also exposed to forming concepts on their own, meeting experts in the field who provide many teachable moments, generating interesting questions and thinking out loud together. These types of field trips and experiences can not be duplicated in the classroom,
Planning a specific field trip based on a lesson the students have been learning in the classroom is a very important part of a successful field trip. Based on the lesson being learned, choose a place to go, when to go and be sure to meet the objectives and standards on who, what, where and why! This will ensure a successful field trip. In addition, if a school bus is not available you must ask parents to drive as chaperones. Chaperones must be willing to give the school a copy of their valid driver’s license and valid car insurance card for the protection of the school and parents. Chaperones need to have a job description designed by the school which details their job responsibilities. A chaperone’s most important job is the safety of the children! Being a chaperone can be a very rewarding part of the trip. Also, the teacher needs to have safety rules in place for the children and they must be explained and reviewed with the children and chaperones.
Field trip sharing after the field trip is an important aspect of the journey because the teacher has introduced the students to a new experience. I have found that an Experience Chart is very valuable immediately after the trip because the experiences are fresh in the children’s minds. The children are always excited to share their fun as they get to relive their trip.
It is my hope that pre-school teachers will consider the risks and take safety measures and allow their students to turn their daily classroom into a environmental classroom by taking them outside the classroom for field trips.
