Is m390 steel aka 20cv steel a tool steel?
I just purchased this Benchmade knife with m390 steel blade and it cost me a fortune but I wanted to know if this new steel is a tool steel. what classifies a tool steel.
M390 = 1.9 carbon, 20. chromium, .30 manganese, 1. molybdenum, .60silicon, .60 tugsten, 4. vanadium at 60-62 HRC

Yes, you are right, M390 is a tool steel, however there are different types of tool steels, and M390 is plastic mold steel, in other words it is designed to cut polymers and retain workable edge long times for that type of work.
There are also other tool steels: die, shock absorbent, high speed, etc.
Some of those are designed to cut other metals and retain serviceable edge at high temperatures, others are cold work tool steels, AISI Sx series are highly shock resistant, and so on.
What classifies a steel to be a tool steel is its designated purpose. I.e. for what type of cutting instruments it was designed. That in turn dictates steel composition.
E.g. High speed steels need to stay sharp and don’t loose edge temper in high temperatures caused by friction when cutting metals. That means Tungsten or Molybdenum in the alloy, or both. Probably Cobalt too. Ergo, AISI M series are Molybdenum tool steels and T series are Tungsten tool steels.

Not all tool steels work well in knife blades, but some of them are very popular. D2, M2, M4 and many others.
